One date to rule them all
HM Revenue and Customs is going ‘all stressed’ about the 2008-09 Self Assessment tax return deadline. If you do it online by the end of January (the 31st) you can avoid any nasty penalty. The 31 October 2009 deadline for a paper returns has now long passed, which means you must file your return by the 31 January 2010 deadline. Any paper returns now will receive an automatic fine of £100. Last year some 5.8 million people filed online up by a whopping 50%. HMRC is expecting more than 9.5m Self Assessment returns this year.
