A report from the National Audit Office has found that up to 44 millions calls to HMRC went unanswered in 2008/09. The tax people received some 103 million calls in the year, but the answer rate fell from 71% to just 57%! Nearly 11,000 staff are employed at the cost of £233m just seem unable to cope.
