HMRC’s regular Talking Points meetings provide ongoing information, guidance and tips, helping you to understand tax issues.

Basis periods – looking at commencement years, changes to accounting date and overlapping periods: Focusing on basis periods, in particular, looking at the different rules that apply to commencement years, changing of accounting date and overlapping periods. HMRC will also look at some pointers when dealing with a change from sole trader to partnership and vice versa.

Disguised Remuneration: How to settle your tax affairs if you are an employer: Following the publication of the settlement terms for disguised remuneration schemes, using case studies, this webinar talks through how to settle your tax affairs and pay what you owe before the new loan charge applies. The short presentation will be followed by a Q&A with a team of experts involved in settling tax avoidance cases.

Construction Industry Scheme: This meeting will provide an overview of the HMRC online portal, including record keeping, verifications, reporting and repayments.

Making Tax Digital for Business (MTDfB): This meeting is for Agents who are helping their clients prepare for MTDfB. From 1 Ap‌r‌il 2019 businesses with taxable turnover above the VAT registration threshold must keep and preserve digital records and provide VAT returns using compatible software. This session describes what you need to do to help your clients prepare for the change, and explains how to  get involved in the pilot. It will cover, digital record keeping, subscribing to the new MTDfB service and submission of VAT returns.

Automatic enrolment – Getting it right: The last employers to stage will start their automatic enrolment duties start on 1 Feb 2018.  This meeting will tell you about common mistakes and how to avoid them – and the latest updates on compliance and our enforcement actions.  In addition, we will cover the details around the first increase in the legal minimum contribution rates on 6th April, as well as how to correctly process tax relief for employee pension contributions.

Demystifying Certificates of Residence for Limited Companies: This meeting will explain all you need to know about applying for a Certificate of Residence, without HMRC needing to write back to you for more information. It will help your clients claim Double Taxation Relief at the earliest opportunity.
