Number of furloughed staff falls to record low

The easing of Covid restrictions has led to a big fall in the number of people furloughed, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Some 1.5 million people – 6% of the total number of people employed – are still on furlough, down from 3.4 million people accessing the CJRS in March and April of this year. In May 2021, the percentage of people on furlough was 7% of the workforce.
This scheme’s peak number was almost 9 million workers furloughed in May 2020, during the height of Britain’s first lockdown.
