The Accountest
An alternative route to IAB membership
An industry standard online knowledge assessment for experienced bookkeepers and accountants who do not hold formal qualifications.

Overview
If you are an experienced bookkeeper or accountant but do not hold formal qualifications, the IAB offers an alternative route to professional membership through an industry standard online knowledge assessment called the Accountest.
The Accountest is designed for individuals who have developed their knowledge and practical skills through workplace experience rather than formal study.
This is not a formal exam. Its purpose is to assess your existing knowledge, practical understanding, and competency in bookkeeping and accounting tasks commonly carried out within the profession.
This test is market-specific for the United Kingdom, with annually updated questions to reflect current UK taxation rates and financial reporting requirements.
How it works
The Accountest is a multiple-choice online assessment consisting of 40 questions, completed within 40 minutes.
Email the Membership Team at membership@iab.org.uk to let us know you would like to take the Accountest.
The Accountest costs £95.00 when taken through the IAB, a saving on the standard external price of £105.00.
Once payment has been received, we will issue the assessment for you to complete at your convenience.
What it covers
The Accountest assesses knowledge across key areas including:
Levels and pass marks
There are three levels of assessment. The levels you pass determine the membership grade available to you.
70%
Level 1 pass mark
60%
Level 2 pass mark
50%
Level 3 pass mark
Membership grades
Your results determine the grade of IAB membership you can obtain.
Levels 1 and 2 must be passed to obtain Associate Membership (AIAB).
Levels 1, 2 and 3 must be passed to obtain Member Membership (MIAB).
If you intend to operate in practice and provide bookkeeping or accounting services to your own clients, you will require Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Supervision. To apply for AML supervision with the IAB, you must hold membership at Member (MIAB) level and successfully complete all three levels of the assessment.
