The IAB is committed to raising standards across accountancy and bookkeeping without excluding talented professionals whose careers have followed a different path. Membership can be earned through qualifications, proven experience or assessed professional knowledge.

Recognition through qualifications

Membership is open to individuals who hold:

A relevant accountancy or bookkeeping qualification at Level 2 or above from the IAB or another recognised awarding body
A payroll qualification at Level 3 or above
An equivalent UK or international qualification

The complete professional is considered: qualifications are assessed alongside the relevance, depth and currency of your professional experience to determine the appropriate membership grade.

Recognition through experience

Professional expertise is not acquired through qualifications alone. If you have developed substantial knowledge through your career, the IAB provides a rigorous alternative route to membership:

Complete an industry-standard online knowledge assessment through a recognised provider
Demonstrate that your knowledge meets the standards expected of an IAB professional
Have your expertise and experience assessed for the appropriate membership grade

New applicant fees apply from 1 October 2026. Existing AIAB, MIAB and FIAB members renew at the renewal rate from 1 January 2027.

Annual membership renewal

Your membership begins in the month your application is approved, once your subscription and required documentation have been received.
Membership is renewed every 12 months.
We will send you reminders starting four weeks before your renewal date, with a link to complete the short annual renewal application and ensure your membership continues without interruption.

Continuing Professional Development

Complete the required number of CPD points for your grade of membership each year.
All CPD submitted must be verifiable.
Maintain your CPD record and submit it as part of your annual renewal.

Annual DBS verification

A current basic DBS certificate is required when you apply and at each annual renewal.
Your certificate must have been issued within the previous six months.
Apply through GOV.UK, Disclosure Scotland or AccessNI (Northern Ireland), as appropriate.
All DBS information is handled in strict confidence.

What qualifications do I need for professional membership?

Membership is open to individuals who hold a relevant accountancy or bookkeeping qualification at Level 2 or above from the IAB or another recognised awarding body, a payroll qualification at Level 3 or above, or an equivalent UK or international qualification. Qualifications are assessed alongside the relevance, depth and currency of your professional experience.

I’m skilled by experience but without formal qualifications: can I still be a member?

What documents do I need to provide with my application?

Provide evidence of any relevant professional qualifications (UK or overseas), copies of any accountancy, bookkeeping or payroll software training certificates, and an up-to-date CV. Your experience is a key factor when we decide the grade you're eligible for. Every application is assessed individually, so the more relevant supporting information you provide, the sooner we can confirm the most appropriate grade. Apply here.

How long does it take for a membership application to be approved?

Most complete applications are assessed within 2 to 3 working days. Processing times may vary depending on the completeness and accuracy of the information provided. If anything is missing or unclear, we'll contact you directly, which may extend the timeframe. Providing all requested information and supporting documents up front helps the process complete as quickly as possible.

When does my membership start and when will I need to renew?

Your membership begins in the month your application is approved, once your subscription and required documentation have been received. Membership is renewed every 12 months, and we'll contact you four weeks before your renewal date to help you renew without interruption. At renewal you'll also provide a current basic DBS certificate (issued within the previous six months) and your CPD record.

What happens if my membership lapses?

If your membership isn't renewed by the expiry date, it will lapse and access to all membership systems and benefits will be suspended. You won't be entitled to use membership designatory letters during this period. If your membership lapses, we'll contact you with information on the steps required to reinstate it.

What are DBS checks and why are they necessary?

What is a DBS check? A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check reviews your criminal record and confirms whether you have any convictions for a relevant offence under the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Regulations. Relevant convictions may legally prohibit registration for AML Supervision.

Why does the IAB require one? Integrity is a key requirement across the financial services sector, and the IAB requires a current basic DBS certificate as part of the approval process, issued within the previous six months at application, and again at each annual renewal.

Which type is required? The IAB requires only the Basic DBS check. Apply directly through GOV.UK, Disclosure Scotland or AccessNI (Northern Ireland), as appropriate. We only accept a certificate issued via GOV.UK or an approved Responsible Organisation. Please check the current approved list before using a third-party provider. All DBS information is handled in strict confidence.

What is CPD and how much do I need each year?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. IAB members complete a set number of verified CPD points each year, depending on their grade of membership: 20 points for Associates (AIAB) and 30 points for Members (MIAB) and Fellows (FIAB), keeping your knowledge current and supporting the next stage of your career. All CPD submitted must be verifiable, and you maintain your own CPD record to submit as part of your annual renewal. Much of your CPD is included through the IAB Knowledge Hub, powered by AccountingCPD.

Why do we need to do CPD each year?

CPD is the ongoing process of learning and improving skills to stay current with industry developments. For finance professionals it maintains knowledge, enhances technical and management skills, and supports long-term career growth. The IAB requires members to complete CPD annually as part of maintaining professional standards.

Does the IAB provide AML supervision for my practice?

Yes. The IAB is an approved statutory Professional Body Supervisor and can provide AML supervision for eligible members operating in the UK. Under the Money Laundering Regulations, anyone providing accountancy, bookkeeping, tax or related services to the UK public within scope of the Regulations must be registered for AML supervision before trading. To apply, you must hold Professional Membership at Member (MIAB) or Fellow (FIAB) grade and have an established or proposed UK practice. Full details are on our AML supervision page.
