Stepping into the year ahead

Stepping Into the Year Ahead

As January draws to a close, there’s a collective sense of relief across the bookkeeping and accounting profession. The first month of the year is always intense and simply getting to the end of January can feel like a milestone in itself. If you’re reading this and taking a breath, know that you’re not alone. You’ve made it through the hardest stretch, and now the year truly opens up.

For me, the end of January is also a moment of transition. It’s when planning starts to turn into action, and intention becomes momentum. It’s the point where we stop reacting to what’s immediately in front of us and begin to consciously step into the year ahead with clarity and purpose.

On the global stage, January has already reminded us just how interconnected and fast-moving the world has become. The World Economic Forum in Davos once again brought together political, business, and thought leaders to grapple with the forces shaping our future. Conversations about geopolitics, technology, climate, and capital were front and centre, underscoring a shared reality: the systems that once felt stable are evolving, and in some cases, being fundamentally reshaped.

Making Sense of Global Realignment

Mark Carnegie has spoken compellingly about what he describes as a “changing world order.” His observations reflect a broader truth many of us are sensing, that we are moving through a period of realignment. Economic power, political influence, and even the way businesses operate are shifting. These changes can feel abstract when discussed on a global scale, but their impact is very real for business owners, advisors, and professionals navigating day-to-day decisions.

Another voice I consistently find insightful in this space is Ray Dalio. His work on long-term economic cycles offers valuable perspective, particularly in times of uncertainty. I often recommend his YouTube video, The Changing World Order, as a way to zoom out and understand today’s headlines in a broader historical context. It’s not about predicting the future with certainty, but about recognising patterns and understanding that periods of change that, while uncomfortable, are not unprecedented.

That said, it would be disingenuous to pretend that the current environment doesn’t feel chaotic at times. Between economic uncertainty, rapid technological change, and an always-on news cycle, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Many professionals are not just managing their businesses, but also carrying the emotional load of clients who are themselves uncertain about what lies ahead.

This is precisely why trusted institutions and communities matter more than ever. At IAB, we see our role as a steady channel and one you can lean on for clarity, credibility, and calm. When the noise feels loud, our focus remains on providing grounded guidance, practical education, and a professional home that supports you not just technically, but strategically and emotionally as well.

Looking Ahead, Together

Looking ahead, I am genuinely excited about what 2026 holds. This is a year of growth and momentum for IAB, with several new projects and initiatives launching that are designed to better support our members, strengthen professional pathways, and deepen our engagement both locally and internationally. There is a strong sense of alignment between where the profession is heading and the work we are doing behind the scenes.

One milestone I am particularly proud to share is that we have officially moved to the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry office. This move is more than a change of address, it also represents an important deepening of our relationship with the London Chamber and a shared commitment to collaboration. Being physically present within this ecosystem opens up new opportunities for joint initiatives, thought leadership, and advocacy that will directly benefit our community.

If you find yourself in London, we would love to welcome you. Please consider this an open invitation to come and see us, connect with the team, and be part of the conversations we are shaping together. Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing more about the joint initiatives currently in development and how members can engage with them.

As we move beyond January and fully step into the year ahead, my message is a simple one: while the world may feel uncertain, there is also enormous opportunity. With the right perspective, trusted partners, and a clear sense of purpose, this can be a powerful time to build, to lead, and to grow.

Thank you for being part of the IAB community. I look forward to everything we will achieve together in 2026.
