Stronger Through Change

As we head into the May bank holiday weekend, it feels like the year is only just getting going. April has a way of doing that. It resets the clock for finance professionals, but it also brings everything into sharper focus.

And this year, that focus comes with a fair amount of noise.

Sarah palmerThere is uncertainty in the wider market, ongoing cost pressures, and from conversations I’m having with colleagues across the globe, a consistent theme is emerging around shifting international markets and changing demand. Alongside that sits the growing conversation around AI and what that means for bookkeeping and accounting, and whether it will diminish the role of the bookkeeper.

It’s a conversation I recognise.

I started my practice right in the middle of a financial crisis. Not long after that came the shift to cloud accounting, and then the introduction of outsourcing. Each time, there were questions about what it would mean for the role of the bookkeeper and where the value would sit.

There is a lot of noise around it, but what it is really doing is drawing a clearer line between those who are simply processing and those who truly understand the numbers behind the work. That is where the opportunity sits.

Despite all this, our community continues to grow.

This is where the IAB comes into its own, and I could not be more proud of our members. Raising standards in their own practices, strengthening their systems, and building more resilient businesses as a result. That confidence is tangible. You can see it in the way practices are operating, the way they are engaging, and the way they are positioning themselves in the market.

For me, that is exactly what a professional body should be. A solid base. A place you can rely on when things feel uncertain, not just for guidance, but for direction.

I was reminded of this recently when I spent an afternoon with our Ambassador network. The insight, honesty, and practical feedback in the room was invaluable. These are practitioners dealing with the reality of business every day, and their input is directly shaping what we do next.

And there is a lot coming.

Much of the work happening behind the scenes is now starting to come together. New products, better ways to connect, and a stronger overall experience for our members. You will start to see this coming through over the next few months, and I am genuinely excited about what it will enable.

So yes, the market is changing. It always does.

But we’ve been here before.

And each time, those who focus on doing things properly, who invest in their standards and their systems, are the ones who come out stronger.

That’s exactly what I’m seeing now.

And it’s something worth building on.
