Working from Home Without Losing Your Spark!
Working from home: Let's be honest, it can be brilliant when you're self-employed. You choose your hours, wear what you like, and get to avoid those packed commuter trains that so many dread each morning. For many self-employed bookkeepers and accountants, especially those keeping their practice intentionally small, it's truly a dream come true. You can structure your day around your most productive hours, take breaks when you need them, and even squeeze in a load of laundry between client calls. But this freedom can also come with a significant downside - isolation. Without the natural social interactions of an office environment, those quiet days at your home desk can sometimes feel a little too quiet.
It’s not something that shows up on a spreadsheet. At first, the freedom is fantastic. But then a week goes by, and your only real chat was a client email or a quick word with the delivery driver. If you’re working from home, especially in a rural area or just starting out, it can feel lonely. And that can drain your motivation.
So, how do you stay connected and energised when your office is your kitchen table?
First, know that feeling flat now and then isn’t failure - it’s normal. We’re social creatures. Just because you're great with numbers doesn’t mean you don’t need the occasional chat or shared laugh. Your work may be solo, but your journey doesn’t have to be.
That’s where community matters. Being part of a membership organisation like IAB means you’re not alone. There’s a whole network of people who know what it’s like to juggle client deadlines and feel like your office chair is your new best friend.
Tapping into that network, through online forums, webinars, or virtual meet-ups, can make a real difference. You might log on for the CPD, but stay for the camaraderie—even the most introverted benefit from a bit of friendly back-and-forth.
IAB Ambassadors

And don’t forget our IAB Ambassadors - experienced members of the IAB community who are here to help. They’re approachable, knowledgeable and genuinely keen to support others. You can connect with them here: IAB Ambassadors.
Then there are our monthly IAB Coffee Mornings - relaxed virtual chats where members come together to share ideas and stories over a cuppa. It’s a great way to feel part of something bigger. Join us: IAB Coffee Mornings.
Even beyond organised events, think about building micro-connections into your week. A regular virtual coffee with a fellow bookkeeper, a quick voicemail to a friend or colleague - small things can make a big difference.
Sometimes, motivation is about purpose. Working from home, it’s easy to do just enough to get through the day. But remembering why you chose this path can reignite your spark. Maybe it’s flexibility. Maybe it’s helping businesses thrive. Perhaps it’s just being your own boss. Whatever your reason, reconnect with it.
And don’t underestimate the power of little tweaks: putting on proper clothes, playing music, working from a café or just stepping outside. It all helps.
And if you’re feeling a bit off, know you’re not alone. It’s okay to have slow days. What matters is how you bounce back. Reach out. Reconnect. Look after your spark.
The numbers will wait. You, however, deserve care today.
