Routes to professional membership

At every stage of your career, IAB membership offers a wealth of support and advice. And with different pathways to membership, the choice is all yours.

By studying IAB qualifications as well as qualifications with other awarding bodies, you may be able to join as a professional member at one of the following grades: Associate, Member or Fellow.  Find out which grade of membership you are eligible to apply for by clicking on the options below.  You can also send us copies of your qualification certificates and CV by completing the enquiry form below and we will let you know whether you are able to apply for membership.

Members in practice

Under the Money Laundering Regulations 2007, if you are in practice you must be supervised.  The IAB is one of 26 professional bodies granted supervisory status by Parliament.  Once you join as a professional member you are able to make an application for an IAB Certificate of Supervision, Certificate of Compliance, or an IAB Practicing Certificate.

This requirement may be waived if you are registered with one of the other 26 professional bodies granted supervisory status by Parliament.

To talk to one of our advisers about your options, contact the Membership Department: membership@iab.org.uk or +44 (0)1732 897750.  Further information about being in practice can be found here.

Student membership:

The moment you enrol on an IAB course, you become a student member for a year without paying extra for the privilege. With access to a host of benefits and support through your first year of study, it’s a great way to get your career off to a flying start!

Routes to professional membership via experience

If you have not completed any relevant bookkeeping or accountancy qualifications and have two or more years of continuous practical experience then you may be able to apply for professional membership at the grade of Member (MIAB).  This route is called the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and requires you to complete a checklist which assesses the areas you are competent in.  The APL checklist must then be signed by an acceptable professional peer who can verify your competencies. We are then taking up three references rather than the standard two. For further information about this route please contact the membership team with a copy of your CV or evidence of your experience documented.  Membership@iab.org.uk or +44 (0)1732 897750.

Please note the administration fee for this route is currently £55.
